Asphalt Vs. Metal Roof
When considering a roof replacement, you have choices to make in materials. While asphalt roofs may be more common in Northwest Ohio, we offer asphalt and metal roofing installations. Both roof types have benefits and drawbacks, and we believe that customers should take the time to learn about both before making their decision.
Benefits of Asphalt Roofs
There are many benefits to asphalt roofs. The materials used are time-tested and backed by long-time manufacturers, often with extended warranties. Most warranties on high-quality asphalt materials are 25 years, with some companies offering lifetime warranties on their materials. Asphalt roofs are low maintenance, provide insulation from noise during rainstorms, and have an elegant and traditional aesthetic preferred by many homeowners. The installation process is fast, with most roofs completed in a single day, and maintenance requirements are low. Asphalt roofs are significantly more affordable than other materials and provide excellent value for the investment.
Benefits of Metal Roofs
Metal roofs are long-lasting with a warranty to match, although the warranty is typically prorated over time. They provide a modern, trendy appeal with a durable powder coat paint finish that many homeowners like. The process is far quieter and less disruptive during installation, although it will take longer than an asphalt installation. Metal roofs also have a high wind rating, which can be attractive to homeowners who have suffered damage from wind.
Drawbacks of Asphalt Roofs
Most of the drawbacks of asphalt roofs are found in the tear-off and installation process. Removing an asphalt roof is messy, and your roofing contractor must be very conscious about protecting your property during the tear-off and the cleanup at the end of the process. Finding a roofing nail in your yard weeks or even months after your roof replacement is never good. The installation process of an asphalt roof can be very loud. If you plan to be home during your roof replacement, you must prepare to be disrupted.
Drawbacks of Metal Roofs
Metal roofing panels have not seen significant improvement since their inception, except powder coat painting systems that claim to increase the panel’s lifespan. However, powder coat paint systems may not be the best choice for the climate in Northwest Ohio. Rust and corrosion are both risks and while that may be an inconvenience for other metals with powder coating, such as your car, it is not something you want for your roof. All metal roofs will rust or corrode over time.
In addition to the durability of metal roofs in this region, there are other drawbacks. Metal roofs require more maintenance, expensive and time-consuming repairs, and a longer installation process. They can be very loud during rain, which can be disruptive. But the biggest drawback is the cost. Metal roofs are significantly more expensive.
What Does Anderson Roofing Recommend?
We want our customers to be educated in all their options, but we also understand that we are the roofing experts who must provide our opinion when customers ask. Given the pros and cons, we almost always recommend asphalt shingles. This is primarily based on value. Asphalt roofs, when properly installed with quality materials, can easily last 30 years, with some roofs having a lifespan of up to 50 years while costing about a third of what a metal roof will. The choice is easy if you have three asphalt roofs replaced for the cost of a single metal roof that may not hold up well to Ohio weather.
When deciding on your roof, we are here to guide you. While any choice has benefits and drawbacks, the decision ultimately comes down to personal preference and cost. We will create a custom plan to fit your needs.
